Vrucara is the name of the cru from which the grapes hail. It takes this name from the presence of vruca, a Sicilian word for a bush that grows spontaneously around the vineyard. This herb has aromas of menthol mixed with those of incense oil that is almost palpable in the resulting wine. Vrucara is the product of a vineyard with ancient roots, sourced from prephylloxera vines that are considered to be the "mother plants" of the estate’s Nero d'Avola. These unique vines hold an ancient genetic code of the grape, preserved for centuries in Feudo Montoni’s vineyards. This wine reflects the deep history of Sicilian viticulture, with Vrucara being a prime example of Feudo Montoni’s commitment to preserving ancient grape varieties. The vineyard’s soils, rich in clay and sand, contribute to the uniqueness of the wine, offering a complex structure that reflects the island’s terroir.
A bright ruby red color, Vrucara is intense and persistent on the nose with earthy aromas, notes of red plum and dark berries, which are in harmony with notes of rose petal, vanilla, balsamic, eucalyptus and licorice. Soft and velvety on the palate, with a delicate acidity and well-balanced and soft tannins.
Feudo Montoni has been producing top-quality wines on its historic grounds since 1469 and is currently overseen by Fabio Sireci, the third generation of a family dedicated to producing the most refined expressions of this long-cultivated terroir. Rosario Sireci purchased the Feudo Montoni estate in the late 1800s upon discovering a wealth of ancient vines, and passed down the property his son. Located in the heart of Sicily and planted in sand and clay, this certified organic winery produces many of Italy’s most celebrated 100% indigenous varietals – Perricone, Nerello Mascalese, Catarratto, Grillo and Inzolia– in addition to the purest expression of Nero d’Avola.
Feudo Montoni, situated in the mountainous heart of Sicily, has been producing highly-acclaimed wines on its historic grounds since 1469. Helmed by Fabio Sireci, third-generation winemaker, the estate was purchased at the end of the 1800s by Fabio's grandfather, Rosario, who recognized the unique fertility of the historical vineyards. Today, the certified organic winery produces many of Italy’s most celebrated indigenous varietalsîPerricone, Nerello Mascalese, Catarratto, Grillo, and Inzolia îin addition to 'Vrucara,' one of the purest expressions of Nero d’Avola. Sireci is particularly proud of the organic farming methods, artisanal cellar practices, and renewable energy sources he’s implemented and maintained, which he says preserve the grapes’ natural flavors and nuances. Fabio and his family are honored to know their plants one by one, know which vines produce the best wine, and have selected them as 'mother plants' from which the 'genetic code' is drawn and transferred into the new vineyards. All operations in the vineyard are undertaken completely by hand, and the results speak for themselves: thanks to Fabio and his family's dedication and the vineyards’ high altitude, fluctuating temperatures, plentiful rainfall and prperty's olive groves and wheat plots, Feudo Montoni wines have staked their claim among the finest in the region.
