Matua started out of a small tin shed in West Auckland in 1969, founded by brothers Bill and Ross Spence. One shone spectacularly - Sauvignon Blanc, and in 1974 Matua produced 400 bottles of NZ’s first. It was not a well-known variety then - yet today NZ Sauvignon Blanc is a global phenomenon that has awoken the world’s eyes to NZ wine.
